Sustainability Analyst
The City of Elgin is seeking a qualified professional to lead the City's environmental sustainability efforts.
Summary
As the sixth largest community in the State of Illinois, Elgin has established itself as a leader among municipalities being one of the first communities to adopt a sustainability plan in 2011. The City has launched initiatives including creating a sustainability action plan with the help of more than 100 community volunteers, implementing energy efficiency cost sharing programs, stormwater management best practices, residential solar and wind energy regulations and a host of other accomplishments. The Sustainability Commission compliments the plan and provides a continued venue for interested residents to provide their input via several work groups. In 2019, the City was also awarded a SolSmart Designation, one of only 265 communities in the nation. Additional information about the City's efforts can be found here.
Responsibilities
The sustainability analyst will be responsible for engaging stakeholders, guiding, measuring and implementing Elgin's sustainability efforts. This position is assigned to the City Manager's Office.
- Serves as liaison to the City's Sustainability Commission.
- Coordinates implementation of and update to City's Sustainability Plan, baseline emission study, and develops related programs and projects for the city.
- Calculates, tracks, and manages metrics, data, and processes supporting City and sustainability action plan initiatives.
- Analyzes data and ensures accuracy of metrics on sustainability initiatives.
- Assesses future needs to meet City and community goals for sustainability action.
- Conducts educational outreach and engages with internal and external stakeholders, including elected officials, businesses, professional organizations, neighborhood groups and school-age children, requiring the ability to make technical information easy to understand.
- Collaborates with City departments to ensure sustainable practices and policies and make recommendations to reduce the City's environmental footprint.
- Identifies innovative solutions and demonstrates measurable progress on goals.
- Manages City's community garden initiatives and sustainability related policy implementations.
- Clearly communicates verbally and in writing, comfortably adjusts to different audiences, and creates narratives, project summaries and reports.
- Tracks federal and state policy and advises on policy priorities.
- Actively seeks and applies for funding opportunities to further sustainability efforts within the City.
- Manages sustainability related agreements, ordinances, and memberships.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree with two years of increasingly responsible experience in any or some combination of the following: environmental science, urban planning, sustainability program development or planning, public administration or facilities management preferred. Bilingual proficiency is a plus.
