Head of Engineering

Remote (United States) San Francisco, CA

We need an experienced leader to manage our growing team and architect our global scale computing systems. You will be responsible working to design and implement new systems to map and monitor the world's forests from space.


Description


You’ll be working on our next-generation forest carbon mapping and conservation technology system: the Forest Observatory. As we expand the scope of the Observatory to cover more regions and map new patterns of environmental change—including carbon sequestration and wildfire risk—we are seeking a Head of Engineering to architect and oversee our cloud engineering resources and manage our growing team of engineers.


The ideal candidate is someone who still wants to role up their sleeves and write code but do so from a position of leadership and vision. We are at an exciting inflection point in the business and this role will be responsible for both execution and strategy.


This is a hybrid-remote work position located in the San Francisco Bay Area.


Responsibilities

  • Design, plan, and help build our global ecological data and analytics system
  • Lead technical decision making and oversee engineering budget
  • Provide technical leadership and management for a growing engineering team
  • Build an engineering culture that prioritizes quality, rigor, and autonomy
  • Plan, execute, and track progress on technical roadmaps in collaboration with product team
  • Manage cloud infrastructure resources
  • Integrate DevOps principles


Required skills and qualifications

  • Experience building, running and leading high performing engineering teams at early-to-mid stage software companies
  • Deep understanding of a broad set of modern technologies across front end, back end and cloud data platforms
  • Experience designing and deploying services on GCP (preferred) or AWS
  • Excellent communication skills and experience working with senior leadership
  • Experience managing and forecasting technology budgets
  • Exceptional ability to adjust priorities and resources to stay on budget and within timelines

  • Python development
  • DAG design and deployment
  • Experience with serverless services
  • ML Ops experience
  • Experience with open source geospatial software
  • Postgres and PostGIS experience
  • Deploying infrastructure-as-code
