For our new Vice President of People, this is an opportunity to transform the employee experience at the National Wildlife Federation to establish people practices and support our ongoing diversity, equity, and inclusion work. This role will report directly to our Chief Executive Officer and serve as a leadership team member. The VP of People will provide strategic human resources guidance and serve as a critical thought partner for work that impacts the entire organization. You’ll lead the People team (including the Associate Vice President, Senior Director of Total Rewards, and the Senior Coordinator), co-creating a vision for a culture of wellness and learning and providing guidance on project prioritization and resources, demonstrating excellence in management, team building, and delegation in a highly matrixed organization with nine offices throughout the United States.

Primary Responsibilities

Oversee all HR responsibilities including continuously identifying and implementing impactful people strategies, workforce processes, modern technologies, and effective workflows that will help NWF grow and maintain an excellent experience to drive strategic decision making, assess best practices, and identify areas for improvement.
Lead and serve as a strategic advisor to the leadership team in developing and scaling a people and performance culture that demonstrates improvement in organizational accountability, aligned with NWF’s values.
Lead the efforts to create and implement innovative HR processes and policies across NWF’s operations that promote racial equity and establish organizational succession plans that support the organization's strategy.
Collaborate closely with the VP of Equity and Justice to develop and implement initiatives guided by NWF’s strategic plan for equity and justice. For example, support and develop Employee Resource Groups as envisioned in the plan.
Develop comprehensive strategic recruiting and retention plans to meet the staffing needs of the organization’s strategic goals and align with the organization’s equity and justice goals.
In coordination with the office of the General Counsel, ensure NWF’s policies and procedures are in compliance with all legal and organizational requirements, standards, and procedures.
Develop and implement comprehensive compensation and benefits programs that help to attract and retain well-qualified professionals.
Provide consultation and advice to managers and staff regarding a wide range of employee issues, resolving employment-related concerns and disputes.
Ensure effective internal communications about the human resources activities of NWF.
Create and administer all employee performance planning, performance feedback, performance evaluation, and training and development systems.
Plan and deliver effective employee, manager, and team development programs and strategies
Develop strategies to evaluate and advance employee engagement.
Oversee the design and operation of human resources information systems that provide the data necessary for the organization to plan, evaluate, and monitor information related to staffing.
Lead organizational change efforts and center equity in all aspects of organizational change.

The Ideal Candidate Profile

Possesses a Bachelor’s degree; with a preference for a Master’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration
At least ten years of HR experience with at least five years of executive HR management experience
Exceptional management skills, with an understanding of the difference between leadership and management and the ability to exercise both

Location & Travel Requirements

This position can be remote or based at our Reston, VA headquarters, or Washington, DC office. The position requires approximately 15% of work travel to various offices during the month across the country, including the NWF’s Headquarters in Reston, VA.
