The primary responsibilities of the Sustainability Manager are to manage the internal and external reporting of Republic Services’ Blue PlanetTM sustainability initiative, as well as, internal sustainability projects. Working closely in support of department leadership and with Legal, External Reporting, Communications, and other cross-functional corporate stakeholders, the Sustainability Manager supports significant portions of Republic Services’ Sustainability messaging and ratings. The Sustainability Manager supports the sustainability organization by leveraging their reporting knowledge and cross-functional leadership skills to drive improvements of the Republic Services sustainability reputation.
-Leverages system thinking, and environmental/sustainability business industry knowledge to craft integrated sustainability content and messaging for internal and external audiences.
-Help various functional leaders develop content to satisfy stakeholder queries related to material sustainability topics.
-Manages and maintains expertise on DJSI, CDP, MSCI and other annual responses. Tracks and measures the sustainability reporting initiatives and identify gaps via benchmarking.
-Monitors and benchmarks reporting trends and changes to reporting standards to provide insights and recommendations on advancing Republic’s external reporting practices.
-Oversees annual sustainability report messaging, working with marketing, communications, engineering, finance and other key functions.
-Drives internal communications/training programs.
Manages stakeholder engagement efforts.
-Liaises with procurement to support identification, assessment and management of sustainability risks and opportunities in the supply chain.
-Provides sales and RFP support, identifies and prioritizes stakeholder questionnaires and surveys. Contributes to the development and review of responses to surveys from investors, suppliers, etc.
-Manages all sustainability driven disclosures, ensuring governance and controls of data.
-Initiates, plans, executes and manages several sustainability projects and related goals/metrics.
-Drives for continuous improvement in sustainability program.
-Travels up to 10% of the time.
Performs other job duties as assigned or apparent.
-At least 5 years of work experience in a business setting with focus on environmental, sustainability or related field.
-At least 3 years of experience with and knowledge of Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), EcoVadis, and sustainability/CSR reporting methods in general.
-Familiar with concepts of ESG/sustainability disclosure, including materiality, legal implications, and governance.
-Experience and/or exposure with ratings/ranking agencies and associated players.
-Minimum of 2 years of experience in waste or transportation industry.
-Demonstrated experience organizing and leading a diverse group of internal contributors and stakeholders to achieve objectives.
Written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to confidently facilitate working sessions with key stakeholders at all levels.
Results orientation and good time management skills with an ability to understand key milestones, goals, and objectives while leading groups of internal and external resources to meet project goals.
-Demonstrated ability and willingness to adjust and adapt to changing conditions.
-Ability to translate sustainability issues into goals and metrics and garner excitement and generate interest in program amongst stakeholders.
-Ability to grasp concepts quickly and exercise follow through skills, adhere to a work schedule and address challenges as they arise, maintaining a positive outlook.
-Minimum of 3 years of experience in cross-functional project management and execution – a major plus if in business/corporate sustainability.
