Genomatica is seeking a highly motivated and creative Senior Research Associate/ Research Scientist to lead and develop Genomatica’s next-generation sequencing (NGS) platform, a critical component of Genomatica’s systems bioengineering workflow for designing, executing and analyzing systems-level experiments critical to driving improvement of our microbial strains for renewable chemical production. The ideal candidate will play a significant hands-on technical role in leading the development and application of new and existing next-generation sequencing (NGS) – based workflows for generating global ‘omics data such as whole genome sequencing, transcriptomics, and high-throughput genotyping and phenotyping. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to interface with multidisciplinary project teams and contribute broadly across the development of Genomatica’s platform technology to guide the design of commercial cell factories for sustainable products. Work with other NGS team members to execute established NGS workflows and deliver high quality results in a rapid and consistent manner.
Lead development and application of new protocols for generating systems level data including metabolomics, DNA/RNA isolation, DNAseq and RNAseq library preps, QC, qPCR, metagenomics from diverse microorganisms.
Interface with cross-functional team members to identify, design, and implement NGS-based workflows that address core R&D needs in high-throughput genotyping and phenotyping.
Work closely with Automation Engineers to innovate and implement automated NGS workflows to increase throughput and reduce hands-on time.
Work closely with Data scientists to contribute to the primary analysis of data generated from omics workflows. Implement and own the system to track data QC across each step of the workflow, identify and execute strategies to continually improve data quality and workflow efficiency.
Serve as subject matter expert in NGS and omics technologies, stay abreast of latest technology developments and identify appropriate workflows and technologies for in-house development. Lead the evaluation, justification, and operation of additional sequencing technologies and sequencers.
Responsible for maintaining and running in-house sequencing operations, coordinating runs with project teams, preparing samples for sequencing, and serving as point of contact for instrument troubleshooting.
May supervise other personnel involved in sampling, sample processing, and running the MiSeq.
Sample fermentation tanks and small-scale experiments and prepare samples for various omics evaluations.
Qualifications & Experience
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required in order satisfactorily perform in this role.
M.S. or B.S. in in molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, biochemical engineering, and/or the life sciences or related field, and 4+ years industry experience. A PhD with relevant graduate work and 0-2 years industry experience will also be considered
Hands-on experience in NGS-based workflows in either industrial or academic setting for at least 2 years.
Minimum Competencies and Skills
2+ years experience running and maintaining an Illumina sequencer (MiSeq, HiSeq, NextSeq etc), and preparing DNAseq and RNAseq libraries
Proficiency with standard molecular biology and/or microbiology protocols, particularly nucleic acid extraction and analysis
Detail oriented, highly organized, and able to see all aspects and viewpoints of a situation.
Excellent organization and communication skills (both written and oral).
Able to collaborate, adjust and thrive in a fast paced, dynamic, team driven work environment.
Desirable Competencies and Skills
Working knowledge of bioinformatics tools to process and analyze next-generation sequencing data
Apply and develop protocols on automated liquid handling and assay systems such as the Tecan Freedom Evo, Labcyte Echo, Lynx, Fragment Analyzer, Bioanylzer for automating routine sample processing tasks (eg. QC, library prep)
Experience culturing a variety of micro-organisms including bacteria, yeast, or mammalian cell culture
