ULI has an exciting new program to promote more equitable access to parks, open space, and nature, and investment in park enhancing and supporting infrastructure. The goal of this program of work, which is being managed by the Building Healthy Places Initiative (online at www.uli.org/health, and part of the ULI Center for Sustainability and Economic Performance), is to contribute to the creation of healthy and sustainable communities and to reduce built environment barriers to healthy behaviors and activities, so that all people have the chance to live their best lives possible. Our work will catalyze the power of ULI’s members, networks, and partnerships around a vision of a green, sustainable, connected and resilient future for all people. This work program is supported by a grant from an external foundation.
ULI’s work program under the Campaign has three main elements: 1) promote equitable access to high quality parks and open space by successfully conducting the 10 Minute Walk Campaign; 2) promote investment in infrastructure networks and systems (such as trails and bikeways) that support parks and equitable mobility; and 3) promote resilient land use and development patterns that reduce environmental vulnerabilities and leverage parks and open spaces to make communities stronger, more sustainable and more equitable. The Senior Director will be responsible for managing the first and second elements, and will work closely with team members with responsibility for the third.
ULI is seeking a Senior Director to lead the new program and promote more equitable access to parks, open space, and nature, and investment in park enhancing and supporting infrastructure. The Senior Director will be ULI’s lead point person on a new effort, undertaken in partnership with other organizations, to promote the bold idea that all urban dwellers should have access to a high quality park within a ten minute walk of their home. This work is being organized via the “10 Minute Walk Campaign” as well as related efforts. This position will report to the Senior Vice President for the Building Healthy Places Initiative.
* Serve as the key liaison with ULI’s partners on the 10 Minute Walk Campaign, to ensure careful, strategic and well-coordinated implementation.
* Serve as the project’s key internal spokesperson and manager, coordinating with other ULI staff, member leaders and members.
* Strategically coordinate Campaign activities, including advisory activities, convenings and District Council engagement.
* Promote the Campaign with ULI members, networks, and partners, effectively leveraging ULI and partner communication tools and resources.
* Manage the project’s research program, including the development of a park assessment toolbox, two major reports and other communications.
* Manage project budget and timeline.
* Manage staff resources assigned to projects, including a dedicated Senior Associate and other staff members with project responsibilities.
* The Senior Associate will support the activities of the Senior Director, implementing the communications strategy tasks, assisting with operations, coordinating convenings and related activities. The Senior Associate will also serve as the core research resource for the program, spearheading the development of a park assessment toolbox, writing/crafting two major reports and undertaking other communications.
Professional Skills and Qualifications
* Master’s degree in urban planning, real estate or a related field.
* Background and experience in managing a program (day to day operations or community outreach liaison) for a city park or conservancy department position highly desired.
* Demonstrated professional knowledge of, commitment to and interest in issues related to health, urban affairs, parks and open space and infrastructure.
* 7 - 10 years of progressively responsible experience managing complex and multi-disciplinary projects for an organization.
* Excellent writing and analytical skills.
* Strong research capabilities. Proven ability to spearhead research, writing and production of reports and publications. This includes the ability to collect, evaluate and focus research, publications and case studies with the goal of sharing information to members via webinars and other communications vehicles.
* Ability to serve as the subject matter expert for ULI on equitable access to parks, open space, and nature, and investment in park enhancing and supporting infrastructure.
* Ability to design and execute forums, workshops and other convenings.
* Outstanding public speaking and verbal communications skills.
* Strong interpersonal skills. The Sr. Director must have the ability to engage with a wide variety of stakeholders, both internally and externally, with the goal of building support for the program and effectively managing day to day operations.
* Candidates should be polished, possess consensus building skills, have the ability to read an audience, and be decisive.
* Experience managing a budget and staff strongly preferred.
* Willingness and ability to travel. Expected travel is two trips per month on average; additional travel may be required during specific time periods.
