Job overview and responsibilities
Responsible for leading the development and execution of United's sustainable fuel activities as part of United's overall global environmental strategy to decarbonize commercial air travel. Lead a team of environmental and sustainability professionals to implement sustainable fuel initiatives to drive progress towards meeting United's goal of reducing carbon emissions 50% by 2050. This includes but is not limited to definition of growth plan to secure sustainable fuel supply, technical analysis of feedstock and technology for production, negotiation of purchase agreements and investment options, evaluation of emerging decarbonization technologies, and identification of operational efficiencies to drive down consumption of fuel. This role requires thought leadership, technical rigor, data collection, analysis, reporting, policy and program development and implementation. A strong emphasis on collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders to define plans and achieve goals.
•Strategy: Develop and maintain a strategic plan, goals and key performance indicators that support United's global environmental sustainability strategy to decarbonize commercial air travel through sustainable fuel and other solutions. Understand and engage in market and industry discussions about the evolution of decarbonization drivers, policies, solutions, technologies and more. Represent United as a thought leader in this space. Engage key internal stakeholders in the development of the plan to gather their input and obtain their commitment in support of this emerging strategy. Facilitate execution of the plan with collaboration across United leadership, business units, and external stakeholders. The strategic plan will support compliance with environmental requirements and sustainability initiatives by monitoring effectiveness of these initiatives through collecting data, analysis, reporting and tracking progress towards goals.
•Implementation: Oversee a team of environmental and sustainability professionals to define and implement the sustainable fuel strategy for United. This includes leadership in industry discussions of market trends for supply and other emerging solutions, technical evaluation of feedstocks and technology, procurement and execution of purchase agreements and investments to meet goals, and engagement across United's network of internal and external stakeholders. Monitor regulatory developments and emerging policies applicable to your area of oversight. Support United's environmental management information system with data collection, analysis and reporting, including supporting our internal controls to monitor compliance with legal requirements as well as both internal and external policies.
•Leadership: Effectively lead teams by establishing department and individual goals. Oversee the department and individual performance and improvement plans. Coach, counsel, and assist employees to develop individual career development and training plans. Lead effective teams using technical knowledge and experience combined with business acumen to provide thoughtful decision making and guidance in strategic implementation of United’s objectives and initiatives. Be solution-oriented and committed to a creating and sustaining a culture of continual improvement and innovation. Model integrity, possess self-awareness and fosters an environment of accountability. Provide transparent communication to department staff, Leadership, and Stakeholders. Represent United's programs and leadership at industry and other external events. Mentor and develop a team that is empowered and engaged in the mission of the Environmental Affairs Department.
•Bachelors degree in environmental sciences/policy or related area
•Minimum 8 years of environmental experience
•Minimum 3 years of managing direct reports
•Strong interpersonal skills and executive presence
•Top notch communication and presentation skills with experience presenting to senior management and/or external audiences required
•Strong analytical skills, and experience modeling and forecast market supplies
•Strategic/innovative thinking, long-term vision, and thought leaders
•Ability to “scan the horizon” and apply risk/benefit approach to emerging issues
•Ability to demonstrate technical depth, as well as executive summaries that resonate with appropriate audiences
•Strong business and financial acumen to evaluate potential strategies and opportunities relevant to our business
•Experience in evaluating complex business challenges and developing pragmatic solutions
•Experience with stakeholder engagement with key groups including communities, government officials, NGOs, employees, etc.
•General understanding of environmental regulations, sustainability, and green building standards
•Strong interpersonal and judgment skills to lead cross-divisional teams towards collective
•Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
•Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
•Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
•Masters degree in business or environmental management or related area
•Minimum 3 years management consulting experience preferred, change management experience a plus
•Minimum 5 years managing direct reports
