The Breakthrough Energy Fellows Program is a new, global initiative designed to recruit the brightest minds in the world to tackle the largest climate challenges and support them on their journey to develop and commercialize the best early-stage, hard-tech solutions for climate change. To reach net-zero emissions by 2050, we need to substantially increase the number of new technologies with the potential to dramatically reduce carbon emissions. We are building this Fellowship program to attract scientists and engineers with exceptional climate technology, fund their technical and business development through non-dilutive grants, and, ultimately, guide their discoveries onto a commercialization pathway. Innovator Fellows selected into the program will have the opportunity to be matched with experienced business mentors and access a robust network of industry partners to develop, validate, and demonstrate their technology, while plugging them into Breakthrough Energy’s world-class ecosystem of investors, technologists, and governments.

Breakthrough Energy is searching for an experienced professional to lead the delivery of the program and the fellowship experience for the new Breakthrough Energy Fellows program. This position will involve a mix of execution, management, and program development; requiring experience building and delivering a program and curriculum at the intersection of business and science to support early-stage innovators. The role will require strategic vision and deep understanding of what it takes to commercialize “hard-tech” climate-focused products, and a strong understanding of the networks and partnerships required to advance these types of ventures. The position will work collaboratively with other Breakthrough Energy programs and a set of key internal and external partners.


Develop and implement a world class, top-tier Fellowship experience to support climate-focused technology innovators and entrepreneurs from around the world
This position will have the primary responsibility of ensuring a high-quality, effective, and positive experience for all Breakthrough Energy Fellows selected to the program
Build and lead operations of the Fellowship experience, which will include:
Developing the curriculum, mentorship, professional development, and support offerings to enable Fellows to develop innovations into viable ventures
Leading junior team members of the Program Offerings and Fellowship Experience team to deliver world-class offerings and an exceptional experience
Building a culture of trust and collaboration among Fellows
Identifying and securing critical partnerships and mentors
Defining goals and tracking success metrics for the fellowship experience team
Collaborate with the entire Breakthrough Energy Fellows team to ensure a successful, world-class program


Roughly 12+ years of professional experience, including a focus on strategic programs supporting early-stage, climate-focused technology development
Deep understanding of the different models of technology support for early-stage innovators
Collaborative, creative, and strategic thinker, who has an informed perspective on how best to develop new technology support programs
Experience managing a team
Knowledge of and relationships with key stakeholder groups – e.g. from government funding organizations to venture capitalists – needed to advance technology ventures

Professional Skills
Proven track record of developing and executing programs to support early-stage innovators
Proven track record of working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment that demands professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality
Ability to manage and develop external partners
Flexibility to assess and adapt strategies to meet the needs of early-stage innovators
Strong oral and written communications skills
Exceptional interpersonal relationship and conflict resolution skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Education and Work Experience

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred. strong work tenure with around 12 years of relevant experience
Entrepreneurial experience or experience at a startup would be of particular interest
Experience in supporting platforms for innovation; a strong ecosystem of contacts in the clean energy space is favorable
Location may be flexible within the US, preference for Seattle, Washington DC, or Denver
