About CleanTech Alliance
The CleanTech Alliance is a trade association that represents over 300 member organizations spanning eighteen U.S. states, three Canadian provinces, and Washington, D.C. Most of the membership is based in Washington state and the organization is based in Seattle, WA. Founded in 2007 by business and cleantech leaders, the Alliance facilitates the generation and growth of cleantech companies and jobs through a variety of educational programs, research, products and services. As a trade association, our mission might be summed up in a single word: Jobs.
The CleanTech Alliance seeks a strong, visionary, creative individual with demonstrated success building productive community relationships and partnerships. A background in association management, entrepreneurship, and/or cleantech business is desirable.
Given the highly visible nature of this position and the Alliance, the candidate that we seek must be energized by public contact and financial development, and thrive in an environment that includes a significant amount of contact with education, community, business and political leaders. The candidate must be comfortable interacting with diverse people from all walks of life presenting a consistent and authentic persona when meeting with any individual or group.
The President & CEO of the CleanTech Alliance leads a dynamic and influential non-profit organization guided by a Board of Directors that is comprised of business, government, and not-for-profit leaders. Under the direction of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee, the President & CEO is the principal leader in advancing a vision to develop the clean technology sector and creating programs and services that assist in making that vision possible. The CEO is responsible for overseeing two (2) full-time employees and two (2) contractors. The operating budget is $750,000 annually.
Primary responsibilities include:
• Leadership. Works in concert with the Board, provides strategic vision and leadership in fulfillment of the Alliance’s mission.
• Governance. Supports the Board of Directors in executing its governance responsibilities.
• Planning. Supports the board in developing the Alliance’s strategic plan and accomplishes a work plan and annual budget to support its implementation. Reports regularly to the Board on assessment of strategic direction and outcomes of efforts.
• Operations. Oversees and is held accountable for the implementation of plans and budgets. Facilitates the work of the team and provides guidance and expectations regarding results.
• Advocacy. Keeps the board and other stakeholders informed about relevant pubic policy. Working with the Government Affairs Committee and Board of Directors, leads discussion of public policy and advocates policies as approved by the Board of Directors. Manages relationship with Alliance lobbyist.
• Membership Development. Provides leadership and direction to the organization’s fundraising and resource development functions. Meets with prospective and current members to build and maintain membership and support for the Alliance.
• Communications. Serves as the primary spokesperson for the Alliance. Guides the development of key messages and utilizes various communications mediums to advance the Alliance’s agenda and strategic goals.
• Financial Management. Responsible for ensuring the fiscal integrity of the organization and the achievement of financial goals. Oversees plan/budget and strategic investments of philanthropic resources to achieve desired results.
• Clearly define and communicate a long-term vision for the organization that provides focus and direction. This would:
o Enable consistent, coherent operating actions.
o Identify and capitalize on appropriate opportunities.

o Implement systems to support individual and organizational accountability, e.g. goal setting, performance review, aligning rewards with performance, and meaningful development plans.

• Articulate an organizational philosophy that explains the current member value proposition.
o Identify the current and aspirational value propositions of the organization
o Act as a convener in the industry and invite multiple stakeholders to the conversation
o Identify and share best practices.
• Foster creativity and innovation internally and actively look for new ideas outside the organization. Continually build a fact-based understanding of the forces that will impact the industry structure.

The CleanTech Alliance is affiliated with the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce. While it is an independent 501(c)6 with separate board oversight and financing, staff members of the CleanTech Alliance are officially employees of the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and participate in Chamber benefit plans, but do not report to Chamber staff.
