Climate change is the biggest global health threat and opportunity of the 21st century. Health care is at the frontline of climate change, bearing the costs of increased diseases and more frequent extreme weather events, but its operations contribute significantly to climate change, making up nearly 10% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. HCWH works with health systems to foster the transition to climate-smart healthcare to protect the public health from climate change and move to a low-carbon economy while improving community resilience, health equity, and access to care.
Health Care Without Harm has had two full-time staff based in Boston for the past decade. The organization hired its very first paid staff in Boston in 1996 to launch its medical waste incineration and medical mercury elimination campaigns. Ever since, HCWH Boston has continued to create and lead some of HCWH’s most ambitious efforts, including toxics reduction, cleaner energy, green building and climate resilience, and environmental health community benefits. Many of these efforts have spread around the country and the world. With both long-time staff retiring in 2020, their successors will have the opportunity to further develop and shape Boston’s leadership work within the U.S. Climate and Health program.
Position Description – About the Boston Directors
The Boston Director of Climate Solutions, in close partnership with the Boston Director for Climate Policy (to be hired), will maintain and strengthen HCWH’s work in Massachusetts, with a focus in Boston, as a place-based, relationship-driven innovation hub, through ongoing direct support, innovative pilot projects, events, publications, data analysis and policy action. The Boston Directors will also work with the rest of HCWH’s climate team to enable the Boston work and other leading Climate and Health Program efforts to be scaled nationally.
Primary Objective for Boston Director of Climate Solutions
Develop, manage, and support climate and health mitigation and resilience initiatives, leveraging Boston’s place based, relationship-driven strategy, to accelerate the health sector transition to a climate-smart health care sector.
The Boston Director of Climate Solutions is responsible for the strategic development, day-to-day management and implementation of the Massachusetts climate and health program projects and sub-contracts, including co-leading the Boston Green Ribbon Commission (GRC) Health Care Working Group, the Massachusetts Health Care Climate Alliance, and other program efforts to meet or exceed HCWH, City of Boston and Commonwealth of MA GHG reduction goals, and prepare for climate change impacts.
Provide expertise and support for health systems’ climate initiatives including energy efficiency, renewable energy, infrastructure and community resilience, and Scope 3 emissions.
Develop and maintain productive strategic partnerships, and coordinate with other GRC sectors, NGOs, like-minded businesses, and government leaders to advance program goals, share progress, and educate and engage policymakers to enact climate- and health-smart public policy.
Coordinate with Member Engagement staff from Practice Greenhealth in their work with Boston and Massachusetts hospitals.
Facilitate and participate in Metro-Boston and Massachusetts meetings with hospital personnel, NGO networks, and in policy opportunities.
Support the development of new tools to advance climate and health work (e.g. how-to guides, toolkits, checklists).
Contribute content to communications efforts in Metro-Boston, Massachusetts and nationally, such as presentations, articles, reports, how-to guides, webinars, and podcasts.
Help review presentation proposals and facilitate educational sessions at CleanMed, the annual conference on health care sustainability.
Build and maintain productive working relationships with staff across HCWH and PGH.
Prepare HCWH Boston-specific grant proposals and reports, and provide budget oversight. Provide occasional content and support for other Climate and Health Program fundraising and reports.
All other duties as requested and needed to meet organizational goals.
Minimum Education: BA or BS in engineering or environmental field. Combined experience/education is acceptable as a substitute for minimum education.
Minimum Experience: At least seven years of experience in program/project management in a nonprofit, consulting, or health care setting.
Required Field of Expertise: Sustainable facilities and operations management, energy management, and/or climate change solutions.
Preferred Education: Professional Engineer or Master’s degree, or equivalent combined experience/education.
Preferred Experience: Experience in health care facility or working with health care clients. Experience implementing climate change mitigation and resilience solutions.
