Strategic Energy Innovations, a non-profit organization based in San Rafael, Marin County, envisions a sustainable world where communities thrive. We achieve this goal by partnering with community groups that are integral to local climate and energy solutions, such as housing providers, schools, colleges and universities, and municipal governments through funding from diverse federal, state, municipal, and foundation sources. Our staff works closely in a team-oriented environment supporting one another on projects and creatively developing new models and approaches. We’re seeking a full charge Accounting Director / Controller who possesses advanced accounting/bookkeeping and communication skills and experience, for a full-time staff position. All work must be done on site. The successful candidate will work with regular interaction and coordination with the executive director, other directors and managers, and all staff.


Departmental responsibilities include:
• Complex, detailed, customized monthly contract and federal/state/grant invoicing for a host of projects
• Maintain General Ledger
• Work closely and collaboratively with CPAs on annual 990 tax returns and Annual Audit, includes income source tracking and categorization
• Oversight and maintenance of established detailed cash-flow forecast sheet/system
• Ability to analyze complex accounting and fiscal data, prepare detailed reports from this data. Provide various analysis, views, financial scenarios to CPA and Executive Director as requested – on both cash and accrual basis
• Review, analyze, update accounting methods and procedures ongoing as needed
• Perform payroll for multi-groups utilizing Quickbooks payroll
• Generate monthly, quarterly, year-end close and financial reporting, and lead monthly close meeting with executive team
• Maintain Project Budget Tracking system/sheets
• Allocate payrolls and expenses across QB categories ongoing
• Execute various Federal and multi-State payroll and significant additional compliance items ongoing
• New contract review for accounting-related requirements
• Reconcile bank accounts and credit card accounts
• Create budgets and worksheets for various funding proposals and other purposes as requested
• Accounts Payable and Receivable
• Oversee time and expense reporting, generate reports, continuous refinement of systems
• Other special projects and miscellaneous bookkeeping-related tasks as needed
• Consistently refine processes according to changing needs of organization and programs
• Provide supervision and guidance of bookkeeping staff

Qualifications:
• 5 to 10 years of professional-level accounting experience
• Graduation from a 4-year accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a closely related major. A Master’s degree is desirable
• Experience with and understanding of non-profit organization fund accounting
• Experience with and understanding of accounting for consulting firms a plus
• Experience in fiscal management, auditing techniques and procedures, budgeting practices
• Advanced working knowledge of Quickbooks Enterprise
• Advanced working knowledge of Excel, specifically including complex formulas
• Experience with Filemaker Pro a plus
• Effective verbal and written communication skills, including working knowledge of Word
• Friendly and cooperative work style, willing to roll up the sleeves and dig in, with a ‘no job too large or too small’ attitude

• $85K to $90K range starting salary
